UTS Foundation Studies assessment

As a UTS Foundation Studies student, you don’t sit exams. Your grades are based on continuous assessment throughout the program.  

Our specialised curriculum focuses on developing your knowledge and skills by applying what you’ve learnt in a broad range of academic areas. Your assessments will ​be a combination of projects and tests, including:  

  • Group and individual activities 

  • Reports 

  • ​Discussions 

  • Essays 

  • Creative projects 

  • Portfolios 

  • Quizzes. 

Where to find details of your assessment tasks

All your subject materials and assessments are on Canvas, our Learning Management System. It’s where you’ll submit assessments, complete group work, receive grades, receive feedback, and communicate with your teachers outside class.  

Log in to Canvas by entering your UTS email address and password. 

Progression requirements

There are some general and specific requirements for your progression:

  1. You must successfully complete the current level of a subject stream before you can study the next level. For example:
    • Foundation English 1 is a prerequisite for Foundation English 2
    • Foundation English 3 is a prerequisite for Foundation English 4
    • Foundation Mathematics 2 must be completed before studying Foundation Mathematics 3

  2. If you’re enrolled in the Standard two-semester program and intend to study an Engineering major, you need to complete Foundation Mathematics 2 in your first semester as a prerequisite for Foundation Mathematics 3.
  3. If you intend to study an Engineering major, it is compulsory for you to complete Foundation Mathematics 3 during your UTS Foundation Studies.

UTS College has Learning Support and Study Skills workshops to help you understand assessment questions, prepare for assignments, improve your essay-writing, maths skills and more.

Grades - grading guidelines, GPA calculation

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the average of all your grades in all subjects. Please remember that fail grades are included in the GPA calculation even if you subsequently repeat and pass that subject.

The UTS Foundation Studies programs use a 10-point GPA scale.

GPA Formula and Calculation

GPA = [Subject1 GP) + (Subject2 GP) + (SubjectN GP)] / (Total Subjects enrolled)
 
Where:

  • Subject GP = the subject's grade point value as per above table

Your Transcript is an official document that will list the subjects you’ve completed, your grades, and overall Grade Point Average (GPA).

When will your grades be released?

   Your results will be released on the Semester Results Publication Date.

What to do if you fail a subject

   If you fail a subject, this will affect your planned articulation to your degree studies. Your Student Success Advisers can talk to you about your options.

Who to talk to about progress

You’re expected to maintain satisfactory academic progress and complete your programs within the normal timeframe. UTS College requires satisfactory progression through your program, and this is also an Australian Government regulation for international students. 

If you’re struggling to meet academic progress expectations, you’ll be placed on Academic Caution. Your Student Success Advisers will contact you to offer additional support.
