Fear not. Adjusting to new environments and ways of learning can be challenging for anyone, especially for those who may be coming to a new country. Here’s a helpful guide to better explain what to expect at UTS College.
What will my course load look like?
On average, students take four subjects per semester with a maximum of 24 face-to-face teaching hours per week. However, there are differences whether your program is accelerated, standard or extended. Classes are scheduled from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 8pm. You’ll also have room in your schedule to make new friends and explore all that UTS College has to offer.
How much time will I need to dedicate towards my studies?
As a full-time student, you should spend about 35-40 hours a week on your studies, made up of equal face-to-face class time and self-study. Expect to spend around two hours each night for completing assignments and reviewing material, which should leave you just enough time to watch a few episodes of that new Netflix series you’re obsessed with.
What kind of learning experience can I expect?
We aim to prepare you for the realities of the Australian educational system and workplace. Our specialised curriculum focuses on collaboration and teamwork. That means you’ll often work with a group to complete projects and assessments.
You may not be used to this style of learning, but don’t worry. We’re here to help you adjust. Many Australian employers emphasise the very same team work skills that you’ll be learning. So, you can find comfort in knowing that you will be getting the best preparation possible for your career.
As part of our technology-enhanced learning approach, we encourage you to bring your own device (BYOD) (tablets or laptops) to your classes. If you choose to BYOD, it is essential that you are equipped with an up-to-date device that meets or exceeds the following specifications:
- Intel Core i5 Processor or better
- 8GB RAM or greater
- 256GB SSD or greater
- Screen: 13” and resolution at least 1920 x 1080
- 802.11g/n Wireless
- USB 3.0 Port
- Windows 10 (64 bit) or Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra
- Microsoft Office

Where will I be spending my time?
Your classes will be held in one of our lecture theatres located in the following buildings:
- UTS Building 5, Block C, Level 1 (Ground Floor) 1-59 Quay Street, Haymarket
- Harris Street Campus, 645 Harris Street Ultimo
- Harris Street Campus, 609 Harris Street Ultimo
The UTS College Auditorium located on the Ground Floor level of the UTS College Blue Building is also home to many lectures, functions, events, and other activities.
Do I need to attend every class?
Yes. Attending every class is mandatory for all UTS College students. If you cannot attend class for any serious reason or emergency, you must contact the UTS College Student Centre by telephone at +61 2 9218 8666. Personal matters and social events are not acceptable reasons for missing classes.
Avoid absences by making sure that you attend the specific class you have enrolled in and that you arrive to class on time.
Why is class attendance so important?
It’s a simple formula. Good attendance > a better understanding of your course material > favourable grades on your assessments > easy acceptance into UTS. Attending every class is not only a requirement of UTS College, but for international students, it is also a regulation of the Australian government and your visa obligations.
This is a lot! How can I manage everything?
Participate in class, ask questions, and get involved in discussions to help you gather all the information you need for your assignments. If you need extra help, don’t hesitate to reach out to your teacher or a Study Success Adviser.
Stay organised and keep a calendar of assessment due dates. Try to allow yourself at least two weeks to work on each one.
