When Jameson Salim finished high school in Indonesia, he wasn’t sure of the exact career he should pursue. Wanting to learn about another culture and being fascinated by how businesses are run, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and study to become an accountant.
“My dad is my biggest source of inspiration,” says the 21-year-old UTS Bachelor of Business student. “He’s one of the hardest working people I know and it’s his passion for his work which has always inspired me to do my best.”
Jameson’s commitment has led to him achieving a top grade point average and the 2016 UTS Insearch Dianne Leckie Memorial Scholarship, which covers tuition fees for two years’ study in the UTS Bachelor of Business program.
“This scholarship means a lot to me, as it acknowledges my hard work and motivates me to work harder and give back to the community,” says Jameson. “One of our main purposes in life should be helping others and this scholarship will give me more time to help others.”
The UTS Insearch Dianne Leckie Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an international student in memory of Dianne Leckie, a respected member of the UTS community who served on the Board of UTS Insearch and the UTS Council.
UTS Insearch Program Manager - Business, Greg Cunningham says the scholarship panel was impressed by the high calibre of applicants, who showed commitment to their business studies and an interest in extra-curriculum activities outside of the classroom.
“Jameson impressed the panel with the clear vision he has for his future in business and how studying at UTS would help him gain the experience he needs to pursue his goal of expanding his family’s business,” says Mr Cunningham.
“Dianne Leckie strongly believed in the opportunities that higher education could provide individuals from all backgrounds. We hope that this scholarship will continue to encourage the next generation of international business leaders to pursue their dreams and all the opportunities available to them at UTS.”
After completing his studies at UTS, Jameson plans to return to Indonesia where he can use the skills and experience he has gained in Sydney to transform his family’s business.
“My goal is to use all the knowledge and experience I gain from UTS and Australian workplaces to improve the accounting system in my family business and in Indonesia. It’s my dream to transform my family business into a larger, sustainable business that could one day become a multinational company.”
