THE SYDNEY INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE & COMMERCE, SHANGHAI UNIVERSITY - 上海大学悉尼工商学院
Background to SILC
SILC is a Sino-Australian joint venture college of Shanghai University and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). Founded in 1994 and with an enrolment of approximately 3,500 students, SILC is located on the Jiading campus of Shanghai University. SILC was the first centre in China to be authorized to deliver the University of Cambridge CELTA course which we have been delivering since 2003. At SILC we offer CELTA once per year, as a four- week intensive course each summer.
Please refer to the Course Dates & Fees section of the website for the next course date. Classes are from Monday to Friday from approximately 9.00am to 5.30pm, and full attendance of the course is a requirement. The start/finish times may vary slightly eg. an earlier start and finish time each day. You will be advised of the exact times on enrolment.
Please note that the course includes an Orientation session on Sunday prior to commencement. It is most important that all participants attend. Course materials and assignments are distributed, documents are completed to send to Cambridge and participants are given an introduction to methodology in preparation for their first teaching practice.
The Jiading campus of Shanghai University is located in the north of Shanghai and can be reached by subway
(Line 11). There is also a free shuttle bus service from the city campus, at 149 Yan Chang Road, (subway Line 1) which CELTA candidates are welcome to use.
Please refer to the Course Dates & Fees section of the website for the current fee which includes the compulsory Cambridge certification fee. Candidates enrolling from outside China need to pay the US$ equivalent of this amount.
* The fee is subject to change.
Upon successful completion of the application and interview process, a deposit of RMB 5,000 is required to secure a place, with the balance due one month prior to commencement. Because of the high demand for limited places (usually 12 trainees only per course), applicants will only be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. To secure a place on the course, it is advisable to apply as far in advance as possible.
Candidates are responsible for their own visas.
Hotel accommodation near the campus can be reserved. These hotels provide moderately-priced, comfortable rooms within easy walking distance of the SILC campus. The SILC-CELTA co-ordinator can provide details on these after enrolment.
Submit online (preferably) through the UTS INSEARCH website. Please read the CELTA brochure and FAQs section on the website before applying. If not submitting online, you may download an application form from the website. Return pages 1-3 of the application form in person, by post or scan/fax to Jason West (see details below). If you live in Shanghai, a face-to-face interview will be arranged. Phone interviews will be arranged for those living outside Shanghai.
