SILC was established in 1994 under a co-operation agreement between INSEARCH and Shanghai University. SILC has current enrolemnt of approximatley 3,500 students and is located on Shanghai University's Jianding campus. SILC was the first centre in China to be authorised to deliver the University of Cambridge CELTA course, which we have been delivering since 2003. At SILC we offer CELTA once per year, as a four week intensive each summer, and the CELTA tutors come from UTS especially to deliver the course.
THE CELTA COURSE
The Cambridge CELTA course provides pre-service training in English language teaching to adults. The course is highly practical in nature rather than theoretical, and is designed for candidates who have little or no previous experience in English language teaching. The Certificate is an internationally recognised qualification and success in the course can enable candidates to teach English worldwide. The course is highly regarded by employers as providing sound, initial training.
The course aims to develop knowledge and ability in the following areas:
- Awareness of the teaching and learning context
- Teaching skills and professionalism
- Lesson planning, and resources for different teaching contexts
- Language analysis and linguistic awareness
Assessment is cumulative across the course and is primarily based on candidates’ teaching practice. Written assignments are also a component of the assessment.
ELigibility and entrance requirements
You should be at least 20 years old by the end of the course and have a standard of education which would allow entry to higher education in your country. You should have a high level of competence and accuracy in both spoken and written English.
It is essential to have a good standard of spelling, an interest in and awareness of grammar and language use and the confidence and flexibility to work with students and be receptive to their needs.

If the application is in order the applicant is asked to attend an interview, at which the applicant’s language awareness and aptitude are gauged – the interview can be done over the telephone for people living outside Shanghai. At the conclusion of the interview applicants are advised as to whether they will be permitted to enroll on the course.
