Cambridge celta at the sydney institue of language and commerce (Silc) shanghai university
The information below has been provided to assist you in applying for the Cambridge CELTA Course.
Background to SILC
SILC is a Sino-Australian joint venture college of Shanghai University and Insearch at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). Founded in 1994 and with an enrolment of approximately 3,500 students, SILC is located on Shanghai University’s Jiading campus. SILC was the first centre in China to be authorized to deliver the University of Cambridge CELTA course, which we have been delivering since 2003. At SILC we offer CELTA once per year, as a four week intensive each summer, and the CELTA tutors come from UTS especially to deliver the course.
The CELTA Course
The Cambridge CELTA course provides pre-service training in English language teaching to adults. The course is highly practical in nature rather than theoretical, and is designed for candidates who have little or no previous experience in English language teaching. The Certificate is an internationally recognised qualification and success in the course can enable candidates to teach English worldwide. The course is highly regarded by employers as providing sound, initial training.
The course aims to develop knowledge and ability in the following areas:
- Awareness of the teaching and learning context
- Teaching skills and professionalism
- Lesson planning, and resources for different teaching contexts
- Language analysis and linguistic awareness
Assessment is cumulative across the course and is primarily based on candidates’ teaching practice. Written assignments are also a component of the assessment.
Eligibility and Entrance Requirements
You should be at least 20 years old by the end of the course and have a standard of education which would allow entry to higher education in your country. You should have a high level of competence and accuracy in both spoken and written English.
It is essential to have a good standard of spelling, an interest in and awareness of grammar and language use and the confidence and flexibility to work with students and be receptive to their needs.
To be selected for the course, an application form must firstly be submitted. If the application is in order the applicant is asked to attend an interview, at which the applicant’s language awareness and aptitude are gauged – the interview can be done over the telephone for people living outside Shanghai. At the conclusion of the interview applicants are advised as to whether they will be permitted to enroll on the course.
Next Course
The CELTA course is delivered once a year during our summer break. The next course will be from 30 July 2012 to 24 August 2012. There will be an Orientation day on 29 July that all candidates are required to attend. Classes are from Monday to Friday from approximately 9.00am to 5.30pm, and full attendance of the course is a requirement.
Course Location
Shanghai University’s Jiading campus is located in the north of Shanghai and can be reached by subway (Line 11). We also run a shuttle bus from the university’s city campus on Yanchang Road (subway Line 1) which CELTA candidates may use for free.
For non-Shanghai residents, individual accommodation can be arranged on campus at the university hotel, and we can book it for you if you like. The university hotel provides comfortable serviced rooms within easy walking distance of the course.
Course Fee*
The fee is RMB 15,550. This includes the compulsory Cambridge certification fee. Candidates paying from outside China would pay the US$ equivalent of the above.
After completing the application and interview process, a deposit of RMB 5,000 is required to secure a place, with the balance due by 10th June. Because of the large demand for places, applicants will only be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. To secure a place on the course, it is advised that applications be lodged by April at the latest.
* The fee is subject to change.
